Alleged Sister of Slain Alliance Gang Member ‘Jerry’ Draws Police Attention After Lamenting Officers Survived Shootout

ST JAMES, Jamaica — The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is reviewing inflammatory comments circulating on social media from a woman who identifies herself as the sister of Romario Brown, otherwise called “Jerry,” following his death during an alleged gun battle with police in Mount Salem, St James, early Wednesday morning.
Brown, 29, was described by police as a wanted man connected to murders and shootings. Reports have also identified him as a high-ranking member of the Alliance gang. He was fatally shot during a police operation along Crawford Street shortly after 3:00 a.m. on September 9.
According to police reports, members of the Area One Fugitive Apprehension Team were operating in the community when they allegedly came under heavy gunfire. Police returned fire, and Brown and three members of the JCF — two policemen and a policewoman — were shot and injured. An illegal firearm was reportedly recovered at the scene. Brown was transported to Cornwall Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
One of the most startling details emerging from the confrontation involved the female officer. Police say she was struck in the chest area, but the bullet lodged in a cellphone being carried in the pocket of her police vest — potentially preventing a far more serious injury. Another officer reportedly suffered gunshot wounds to his shoulders and both legs, while a third sustained a graze wound.
The shooting has since taken another turn following the circulation of an expletive-filled video featuring a woman claiming to be Brown’s sister.
According to reports, the woman praised her brother for fighting back against the police and expressed regret that the three injured officers had survived the confrontation. The JCF is reportedly taking an interest in the statements and reviewing the video.
The comments have generated significant discussion online, particularly because they appear to go beyond mourning the death of a relative and instead celebrate armed resistance against members of the security forces.
Police are reportedly also examining other social-media activity surrounding Brown’s death, including hostile comments posted by other individuals concerning the officers who survived the shooting.
The circumstances surrounding Brown’s fatal shooting are subject to investigation. The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) was deployed to the scene, while the JCF’s inspectorate arm was also notified.
The incident comes amid continuing efforts by the security forces to suppress organised criminal activity in western Jamaica. Mount Salem has operated under a Zone of Special Operations since September 2017.
The social-media reaction to Brown’s death, however, raises a wider and uncomfortable question for Jamaica: how deeply has the glorification of the “badman” culture become embedded in sections of society when the shooting of police officers can be openly celebrated?
For Jamaica, the issue may extend beyond one wanted man, one police operation or one inflammatory video. It speaks to the continuing challenge of dismantling a culture in which heavily armed gangsters can become admired figures within some communities, while those confronting them are viewed as the enemy.
