Warren allegation in question as video emerges of Sanders saying in 1988 a woman could be elected president

The well anticipated Democratic debate took place on January 14th 2020 at 9pm Est in Iowa. The debate which has been criticized for being all white hosted only half of the Democratic presidential hopefuls. Standing proudly on the debate stage were Tom Steyer, Senator Elizabeth Warren former Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Bernie Sanders, former Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and Senator Amy Klobuchar.

Elizabeth Warren addressed the big news talking point of the day regarding Bernie Sander’s allegedly saying that a woman couldn’t be president. It was reported that he allegedly said it in a private 2018 meeting. Warren responded by saying “Bernie is my friend” and continued to express sentiments that she wasn’t going to attack him. She made the point that the men on the debate stage has lost 10 elections between them in contrast to the women on the stage winning every election they’ve been in. Warren also made the point that she is the only person on the stage who has beaten an incumbent Republican in the last 30 years.
A video has now emerged of Bernie Sanders saying women could be president in 1988
The clip emerged Tuesday of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) saying in 1988 that he believed a woman could be elected president, just a day after Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said Sanders told her in 2018 that a woman couldn’t win the presidency.
“The real issue is not whether you’re black or white, whether you’re a woman or a man. In my view, a woman could be elected president of the United States,” Sanders, at the time a high-profile supporter of Jesse Jackson’s 1988 presidential bid, said in the clip. “The real issue is whose side are you on? Are you on the side of workers and poor people, or are you on the side of big money and the corporations?”
The clip was highlighted by Meagan Day, a staff writer for the leftist magazine Jacobin and a vocal supporter of Sanders.

Bernie Sanders expressed that he doesn’t think anyone believes a woman couldn’t win. He seems to be distancing himself or denying this alleged statement ever happened. He reminded Warren that he beat an incumbent Republican in 1990 which was exactly 30 years ago. He took the opportunity to speak about his campaign noting that he believed he has the largest voter turnout and the largest grassroots support.
According to The Hill, Sanders vehemently denied the claim, saying Monday, “It is ludicrous to believe that at the same meeting where Elizabeth Warren told me she was going to run for president, I would tell her that a woman couldn’t win.”
Warren later said she met with Bernie and that “among the topics that came up was what would happen if Democrats nominated a female candidate. I thought a woman could win; he disagreed.”
Former Democratic Presidential hopeful from Hawaii who is now out of race, Tulsi Gabbard, tweeted her response to the Saga.
