JUTC Launches New SmartFare Card for Cashless Bus Travel
July 22, 2025 | Jamaica Live News Desk
The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has announced the rollout of its upgraded SmartFare Card system, a move that marks a significant shift towards fully cashless payments on JUTC buses across the Corporate Area and St. Catherine. The new cards will replace the older generation of Smart Cards, which will no longer be compatible with the company’s revamped bus system.

Out With the Old, In With the Smart
Commuters are being advised that the old Smart Cards will not function on the upgraded bus system. All passengers must update to the new SmartFare card in order to continue accessing JUTC services.
The good news? There is no cost for the new SmartFare card. However, in the event that a card is lost or damaged, a replacement fee of $700 will be charged. Only personalised cards—those registered in the name of an individual—are eligible for replacement.

Benefits of the SmartFare System
With the new SmartFare cards, passengers can now:
- Tap to pay at the card reader beside the bus driver—no cash required
- Check balances on-board or at top-up locations
- Access continued fare discounts for seniors, students, and citizens with special needs
Balance Transfers and Sign-Up
Existing users of the older Smart Card need not worry about losing their balances. Once you sign up for your new SmartFare card, any remaining funds from the old card will be automatically transferred.

Top-Up Locations
You can top up your SmartFare card at the following JUTC locations:
- Spanish Town Lay-by
- Greater Portmore Depot
- Downtown Transport Hub
- Half Way Tree Transport Centre
These locations will also provide customer service support for registration and replacement inquiries.

New Bus Routes Launch July 28
The new fare system comes just in time for the launch of new JUTC bus routes, which will take effect on Sunday, July 28, 2025. These routes are part of the company’s wider effort to modernize public transportation, improve efficiency, and enhance the commuter experience across the island.
The JUTC is urging all passengers to upgrade their cards early to avoid disruption in service and to ensure a smooth transition to the modernized, cashless travel experience.
