Government’s New Mission is to End Absolute Poverty In Jamaica

Prime Minister Andrew Holness touting his accomplishments stating poverty in Jamaica has been reduced by fifty percent.

The proportion of individuals residing below the poverty line has declined from 16 percent to 8 percent, he said. This development signifies that fewer Jamaicans are experiencing hardships, while an increased number are earning adequate income to live with dignity.

According to Holness, this represents significant progress, supported by increased minimum wages, enhanced employment opportunities, and prudent economic management. While there remains work to be accomplished, this marks a definitive advancement in a positive direction.

Prime Minister Holness told the Jamaican people that, having placed their trust in his Government, he has made it a priority to ensure an improvement in their circumstances.

We have delivered on our commitment, without introducing any new taxes. You’ve seen the development of new highways, the upgrading of critical road networks, and the launch of the New Social Housing Programme, which is transforming lives. Many of our fellow Jamaicans who once lived in unsafe conditions, whether in makeshift shelters, abandoned vehicles, or even trees, now have the dignity of a proper home, he said.

He outlined his accomplishments: Your administration has made it a priority to ease the tax burden on the Jamaican people. Through targeted reforms and responsible fiscal management, we’ve put over $76 billion back into your pockets.

🇯🇲 $12B in tax arrears forgiven
🇯🇲 GCT reduced from 16.5% to 15%, saving you $13.9B
🇯🇲 Transfer tax on land reduced, saving $3.4B
🇯🇲 Pension tax exemption raised, saving $1.1B
🇯🇲 GCT on electricity cut from 15% to 7%, saving $2–3B

Prime Minister Andrew Holness: Compare that to the previous administration, which increased taxes and took $34B more from Jamaican households and businesses. This is a government focused on empowerment, relief, and economic stability. These are not promises; these are results. The dividends of our strong economy are now being used to fix rural roads and deliver water to underserved communities. Laying the pipes is just the beginning, your water is coming!

He encourage the Jamaican public to continue choosing Jamaica. Choose what is right for you. Choose what is right for your family. And continue to choose the Jamaica Labour Party.
