Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia “Babsy” Grange, has announced that Jamaica and South Africa will jointly honour The Right Excellent Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jamaica’s first National Hero, with two major tributes — a commemorative plaque at Freedom Park in Pretoria and a statue to be erected in South Africa.

The decision was reached following a productive meeting between Minister Grange and South African High Commissioner Lumka Yengeni, who paid a courtesy call on the minister earlier today. The discussions centered around strengthening cultural ties between Jamaica and South Africa and deepening collaboration through shared heritage and historical recognition.

Plaque at Freedom Park

The plaque will be installed at Freedom Park, a sacred site in Pretoria that memorializes those who lost their lives during the South African wars, World Wars I and II, and the apartheid struggle. Both nations will work together to finalize the wording for the tribute, ensuring it reflects Garvey’s global message of black pride, empowerment, and unity.

Statue of Marcus Garvey

In addition to the plaque, Minister Grange revealed that Jamaica will commission a statue of Marcus Garvey, while South Africa will provide the site for its installation. The location will be determined through mutual consultation between both governments.

The initiative forms part of Jamaica’s ongoing efforts to preserve and promote the legacy of Garvey, whose philosophy of self-reliance and African unity continues to inspire movements worldwide.

Strengthening Cultural Bonds

Minister Grange described the engagement as “a real pleasure,” emphasizing the importance of cultural diplomacy in celebrating shared struggles and triumphs across the African diaspora.

She also presented Jamaica 60 memorabilia to High Commissioner Yengeni and First Secretary Siliga, who accompanied her, symbolizing the enduring friendship between Jamaica and South Africa.

“It was a very productive meeting,” Minister Grange said. “Out of our discussions came agreement on meaningful ways to honour our National Hero and to strengthen the cultural bridge that unites our peoples.”
