Anchovy Police Station Officially Opens: A New Era of Policing and Community Safety

Jamaica Live News Desk- Aug 8-2025

The transformation of the Anchovy Police Station marks a significant milestone in the effort to modernize law enforcement facilities across Jamaica by the Andrew Holness government. On Tuesday, August 5, the new, state-of-the-art facility was officially handed over to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, the Hon. Dr. Horace Chang.

Once an outdated structure, the Anchovy Police Station has undergone a complete overhaul, emerging as a modern two-storey building that not only enhances safety for the community but also boosts the morale and efficiency of the officers who serve there. This transformation is part of the broader initiative to modernize policing infrastructure, making it more conducive for officers to perform their duties effectively and ensuring the security of residents in Anchovy and the surrounding areas.

A Strategic Investment in Policing and Community Trust

The construction of the new police station began in March 2022 and was funded by the National Housing Trust (NHT) under the Ministry of National Security’s Project Rebuild, Overhaul, and Construct (ROC). The project, which cost approximately $100 million, is a prime example of successful collaboration between the Ministry of National Security, the National Housing Trust, and the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

Dr. Horace Chang, speaking at the official opening, emphasized that this new facility is not just about concrete and paint. It represents a strategic investment in both the well-being of the officers and the safety of the community. The station is designed with several climate-smart features, including solar power and a rainwater harvesting system, ensuring sustainability and environmental responsibility.

“We are improving the environments our officers work in, and in turn, we are improving the quality of policing services we deliver to the community,” said Dr. Chang. “This partnership is also an important step in rebuilding trust with the communities we serve, enhancing the safety and security of all Jamaicans.”

Modern Amenities and Sustainable Features

The new Anchovy Police Station is equipped with all the modern amenities needed to support a robust law enforcement operation. The facility includes living quarters, detention cells, and a water harvesting system, making it fully equipped to handle the demands of the community.

Sustainability was also a key consideration in the design. The station features solar power, reducing its environmental footprint, and a rainwater harvesting system to ensure a sustainable water supply. These climate-smart features not only contribute to the station’s operational efficiency but also serve as a model for other facilities under the Project ROC initiative.

Enhancing Officer Morale and Community Safety

Garfield Taylor, Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) for the Support Services Branch, highlighted the importance of this project in improving officer morale and strengthening community safety. “This facility is more than just a building. It is a tool that will help improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our officers, ensuring they are better equipped to serve and protect the community,” Taylor stated.

The transformation of the Anchovy Police Station aligns with the wider goals of Project ROC, which seeks to modernize and upgrade police facilities across Jamaica. With improved working conditions, officers will be better able to carry out their duties, leading to better service delivery for the public.

A Community-Focused Initiative

The opening of the new Anchovy Police Station is a direct response to the needs of the community. It reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the security of the people of Anchovy and surrounding communities by ensuring that law enforcement has the resources and infrastructure necessary to effectively combat crime and maintain order.

This newly built station, with its focus on sustainability, modern amenities, and improved officer welfare, is a strong step forward in the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s modernization efforts. It serves as a testament to what can be achieved through strong collaboration between government agencies and highlights the importance of investing in the infrastructure needed to support a secure and safe Jamaica for all.
